The Heritage

The history of this area extends to the times of King Dutugemunu who reigned Sri lanka during 161 137 BC and the area has historic connections to the sacred Ruhunu Katharagama shrine.

After King Dudugemunu concurred the whole of Sri Lanka & freed the entire country from south Indian Invaders one of his main tasks was the construction of Ruhunu Katharagama Shrine as gratitude for support extended by the ethnic Tamils who helped in concurring the south Indian invaders. Katagamuwa was the land provided as manor for the chief caretaker & his generation as fee for taking care of the holy shrine & protecting it.

Later, mainly during the colonial era, katagamuwa became mostly un-inhabited & during the late nineteen nineties two buildings were built as holiday bungalows.
